Bold and full-bodied, this Single Origin from Sumatra is defined by deep notes of dates, roasted almonds, and rich dark chocolate. A big, satisfying brew with serious character.
This asian coffee is sourced from farmers across 19 villages in Indonesia, where 70% of producers are women. Part of the funds from this harvest also go toward protecting the surrounding Sumatran forests, thanks to our import partner DR Wakefield
Gender inclusion is at the heart of KOPEPI’s mission, with 70% of smallholder households led by women, empowering them through trade premiums, training, and community support to challenge poverty and sustain their families.
The Hutan Conservation ProjectFounded in 2008 and led by Chairwoman Rahmah Ketiara, KOPEPI is a pioneering Fair Trade coffee cooperative in Sumatra. Spanning 19 villages across Bener Meriah and Aceh Tengah, the group has been exporting ethical coffee since 2013. They have built a renowned reputation by successfully blending high-quality coffee production with a deep, lasting commitment to community welfare and environmental sustainability.
Women make up 70% of KOPEPI’s membership, driving a strong focus on gender inclusion. The cooperative empowers its smallholder farmers by paying premium prices and offering training in sustainable agriculture. To secure year-round livelihoods, they provide free coffee, fruit, and rice seedlings during non-harvest months, while even hosting aerobic fitness classes to support overall community health and well-being.
In partnership with DRW, the "Hutan" project funds crucial Sumatran forest conservation. Sourced from diverse, high-altitude farms, this unique Arabica coffee supports vital agroforestry. By planting native trees alongside income-generating crops like avocado, banana, orange, and durian, the initiative protects the local ecosystem while securing a stable, long-term economic future for the farming communities.
Rather than build our own impact goals we have used the United Nations’ framework of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide how we purchase our coffee. This enables us to align our impact with some of the biggest social and environmental challenges we face today.
